Musical Styles: Classic Jazz Styles with Great Artistry

George Sheck has worked as a musician in the New York/Connecticut area for the over 40 years before relocating to Bluffton South Carolina.

In his early 20?s, George was forced to make a choice. While he was performing with Peggy Lee in venues around the Northeast, He was approached by Judy Collins about joining her group and at the same time, offered an audition for Texas Blues and Rock musician, Edgar Winter's first group. After auditioning numerous bassists around the country, Edgar offered and George accepted the job and was in the Columbia Record's New York studio recording within a few months.

During the next 24 months he traveled around the United States and Canada playing at venues such as The Hollywood Bowl, The Filmore East, The Orange Bowl and playing before 50,000 people at The Boston Commons. In 1972 Winter's group disbanded and George moved to Los Angeles to re-form this group with some of his fellow band members. After 10 months and one album, the new band couldn't make a go of it and disbanded. George missed New York so he moved back to Manhattan and began performing, recording and teaching.

During the next several years George played and toured with Esther Phillips, Lenny Welsh, Sal Salvador, and Lou Stein, traveled with Broadway tours of Hair and Godspell, and taught classes with/for Jazz pianists and educator John Mehegen. He played on many recording sessions including the sound track album for the movie The Hot Rock.

In 1990, George joined Hot Licks Videos, a company that produced musical educational lessons on videos. He worked on producing and editing video along with artist relations. George rose in the company to operations manager until 1999. George joined the Good Music Record Company, a business that published music compilations, music text books and magazines, in 2000. There he handles advertising and website maintenance.

In 2004, George relocated to Bluffton SC where he still works for Good Music and has continued his music career in the Savannah-Hilton Head area.

Testimonials

Elaine from TN.

Hi, Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed The Jazz Corner, especially Bobby Ryder's performance on Monday night while we were there on vacation. I've always liked jazz, but was not particularly "into it". My sister, brother-in-law and I came there looking for something different. It was without a doubt the best thing we did while on the Island. The people there are just sweet, down-to-earth people who did everything possible to see that we had a good time. The food was out of this world (thanks to the chef) and the show was completely unexpected. It was way beyond our expectations. We enjoyed it so much, we had to come back the next night. We left the next day, but you can bet if we ever come back to the Island - we'll be there at the The Jazz Corner. It was the highlight of our vacation and we'll recommend it to anyone going there. We hope to make it back soon. Thanks again for a great experience!

I wanted to drop you a note of thanks for last Monday night. I performed with John Brackett and was very impressed with your place. The room sounded wonderful, looked spectacular...the crowd was amazing and your employees were truly a pleasure. You've really got something special going over there. Please know that I would love to come back anytime with John or with Kirk Lee and my band.

My first exposure to The Jazz Corner was 22 May 2008 when JOhn Brackett played. Our group really enjoyed this. I don't live in the area, but whenever I pass thru I will make it a point to stop and hear some good music and taste some good food. Thanks for a great evening.
