Musical Styles: Smooth and Precise Drumming with Soul and Character

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Justin Varnes studied music at the University of North Florida. After graduating with degrees in jazz studies and percussion, Justin relocated to New York City to pursue a master's degree in jazz studies at the New School. In New York, Justin began touring with vocalist Phoebe Snow, with whom he performed on the Roseanne Barr Show, as well as National Public Radio's "World Cafe" (Justin would later perform on "World Cafe" with pop group "Five for Fighting"). He also performed with Phoebe at Madison Square Garden, where he played alongside singers Jewel and Paula Cole. Justin still performs with Ms. Snow.

Justin has performed with several jazz greats in New York, including: Wessell Anderson, Peter Bernstein, Aaron Goldberg (Joshua Redman), Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Printup, and Ben Wolfe (Harry Connick, Jr.).

Currently residing in Atlanta, GA, Justin performs regularly with the Atlanta artists Kevin Bales, Gary Motley, and Audrey Shakir as well as continued work with Bob Reynolds, Wycliffe Gordon and Wessell Anderson. Recently, Justin was tapped for work as part of the Earl Klugh Trio.

Justin has appeared at the Jazz Corner with Christian Tamburr, Ira Sullivan, Kenny Barron, Kevin Bales, Audrey Shakir, Bob Mastellar, Lisa Roti, Noel Freidline, Bob Reynolds, Scott Giddens, and his own group, The Classic Jazz Quartet.
